Where the money actually goes
A resin quote splits roughly three ways: groundworks, the resin system itself, and the details. On a full dig-out job, excavation, cart-away and the porous sub-base take a large share of the total, the part nobody sees once the drive is finished. The resin bound wearing course (aggregate, two-part binder, mixing and trowelling) is typically 35 to 45%. Edging, drainage, steps and recessed covers make up the rest. This split explains why overlay jobs price so much lower: the expensive half of the job already exists.
That is why two quotes for the same drive can be far apart. One has 150 to 200mm of open-graded sub-base over a membrane with proper falls; the other has a shallow skim and a promise. On Teesside's boulder clay the shallow version sinks, ponds and cracks, so compare the build-ups line by line before comparing totals.

Resin bound, full dig-out
The complete job: excavate, membrane, open-graded sub-base, porous binder course, 15 to 18mm wearing course. Price within the band is driven by aggregate choice (imported marble and speciality blends cost more than standard quartz and granite), access for grab lorries and skips, and how much edging the shape needs. This is the quote to expect for most Teesside front-garden conversions.
Resin bound, overlay
The value option when the existing tarmac or concrete is genuinely sound, crack-free and correctly drained. Preparation, priming and the wearing course only. The catch is honesty: a base with movement in it will print every crack through the new resin within a couple of winters, so an overlay quote should follow a proper look at the base, not a glance from the kerb.
Resin bonded
The scatter system usually costs less than bound and gives the best grip of any resin finish, which is why sloped drives around Hartburn and Fairfield often end up here. It is non-permeable, so drainage to a lawn, border or channel drain has to be designed in to stay clear of the 5m² front-garden rule.
Paths and patios
Lighter build-ups for foot traffic, but access is the swing factor: rear gardens on Teesside terraces mean barrowing through the house or a side passage, and that labour shows in the rate.
The extras that change a quote
- Edging: resin must trowel to a solid restraint.
- Dropped kerb: a council application, with the crossing built to the council's specification. Apply early; it is the long-lead item.
- Drainage on bonded jobs: channel drains and connections, priced by the length of the runs.
- Manhole and utility covers: recessed trays so the covers sit flush with the resin.
- Steps and walls: priced separately; combining them into the same job shares excavation and skip costs.
- UV-stable resin: on the coast at Redcar and Seaton Carew it is not optional.
How to weigh up a quote fairly
Judge the spec, not the headline: resin system named and UV-stable stated, base build-up in millimetres, aggregate blend identified, edging itemised, drainage shown, waste removal included, guarantee length in years and VAT clear. A quote missing those lines is not cheaper, it is just less specific. Seasonal note for 2026: resin laying is weather-limited below about 5°C, so Teesside diaries fill fastest from April to September; shoulder-season quotes are often keener and the ground here stays workable well into autumn.
